As Scottish Summit is a Microsoft focussed event, getting to hear how Microsoft approach Accessibility was something I was really keen to learn about. What surprised me as I started to talk to them, is that they are working towards Digital Inclusion and Accessibility as a Deliverable.
That’s right – a deliverable. For Microsoft, a core part of how accessibility is being managed throughout their DNA is by treating Accessibility as an actual project goal and requirement.
More than a job
When I approached the Microsoft EMEA Accessibility team, I got talking to Hector Minto and others from the team. Hector is a Microsoft Accessibility Evangelist, and both his and the teams enthusiasm and passion for this area was completely infectious. It is plain to see that these are no a bunch of 9-5’ers just doing a job. This is something that is so much more than that. This is something that is genuinely important to them and that they want to talk about.
Getting Hector as a Keynote speaker on the Main Stage was a real statement by Mark Christie and Iain Connolly. The event aims to be Inclusive By Design, and this showed that Accessibility is a major part of that. Front and centre, making it very clear that this is a crucial to the event and vital within the modern workplace.
Not only did Hector give up his time on a Saturday to present his session live, but he also participated during the day. He was a regular attendee at sessions and a vocal contributor in the chat. This meant a huge amount to both me and to the speakers. On behalf of everyone a massive THANK YOU!
So, kicking off my Scottish Summit Accessibility 2021 playlist, please sit back and enjoy this amazing session by Hector.
