Creating a More Inclusive workplace

Blog Header. Scottish Summit 2021. Zoe Wilson: Creating a More Inclusive Workplace

It’s easy to talk about what a more inclusive workplace should be, but how do we go about creating such a place? At Scottish Summit 2021 Zoe Wilson delivered a great session on this very subject!

Zoe is a passionate advocate for Accessibility in the workplace, and in everyday life. Having her speak about this topic provides us with great insight, practical application, and top tips.

In the intro to the talk, Zoe shares a really helpful graphic about the things that create requirements for accessibility. I’ve put the image below, partly for my own permanent reference, as it really helps define things.

Accessibility tools in action

Reading blogs, and doing online training, is a really helpful thing – but you can’t beat seeing how things work and then trying it for yourself. What I really enjoy in this session is that Zoe takes us through some of the tools available. She also shows us how we can go about bringing inclusion and accessibility into our environments.

The session covers things like the Immersive Reader and Read Aloud modes in Office 365, as well as topics like creating more inclusive documents, presentations, and more.

Teaming Up and being Inclusive!

Microsoft Teams has become such a major part of life for us, especially over the last 18 months. Companies and individuals have suddenly had to shift from using it as an occasional collaboration tool, to it being the lifeblood of the business. For many people it, and other similar tools, have also become the main form of interaction – with work colleagues and socially.

What is often not fully appreciated is how to make the most of this, and how to ensure that we use those tools in a way that is inclusive of everyone. This includes all people with different neurodiversities, not just those with defined accessibility requirements. By that I mean people who may live with social anxiety issues for example. It can also be difficult for people who suffer from body dysmorphia, where they don’t like seeing themselves or don’t like their own appearance.

Creating an environment where all these considerations are made can be exceedingly challenging. It helps to learn from each other in these situations, as we all have different experiences. In this talk, Zoe shares some of her experiences, knowledge, and insights around using Teams. There are some absolute solid gold pieces of advice in here, and a must for anybody who uses Teams!
