#a11y

Accessibility Icon (taken from the Fluent Design Library)

The a11y project is driven by a community of people across all areas of the digital world, working together to make digital accessibility easier. The term A11y comes from the fact that between A and Y in the word Accessibility are 11 characters… which plays nicely with being able to say that you are an ally of accessibility.

Just to note, that I’ve learnt recently that a11y is spoken as “a-eleven-y” rather than “ally”, but it’s still a great connection!

Check it out over at The A11Y Project – there’s a ton of resources, materials, guides, and more that provide a great library of material for starting to explore Accessibility and then continuing on with that journey

Microsoft Learn – Accessibility Fundamentals

Accessibility fundamentals – Microsoft Learn

Microsoft Learn is a fantastic, ever-growing, academy of self-paced learning material covering pretty much the whole of the Microsoft world. As you go through the courses you build up your achievements and can track progress, with the added bonus that during some events (such as Scottish Summit) there have been “Cloud Learning Challenges” where you have been able to win everything from bragging rights to physical prizes, and there are often free exams available as well!

The Accessibility Fundamentals course is a quick course that takes a couple of hours but gives a really good overview and introduction to digital accessibility.

Accessibility by Design

Michael Roth

The awesome Michael Roth (@MichaelRoth42) dropped his debut Microsoft Docs article at the tail end of 2021 – and what a debut!

Titled “Accessibility by Design” this is a well written and thought out piece around the topic of Accessibility and making it a central part of our thinking.

He also covers some very quick wins that are soooooo simple to implement that you will wonder why you’ve not done this before!

Scottish Summit 2021 saw a whole track during the event dedicated to Accessibility. Featuring some amazing content from Microsoft and the Community this is a treasure trove with something for everyone.

Some of the sessions are definitely the more technical level, whilst others detail everyday experiences with Accessibility tools.

You *need* to check out this playlist and find the content that hits home – there’s bound to be something there!

The Scottish Summit 2021 playlist can be found over at YouTube. You can also find my series of posts discussing and highlighting these videos by clicking here.
